Those who travel past the Bangor Parks and Recreation building at 647 Main Street might have noticed an uptick in heavy machinery out that way.

The large pieces of equipment have been used to tear down a large part of the Parks and Rec building's structure, which used to sit in the back of the parking lot, off the Farm Road.

According to Bangor's Parks & Rec Director, Tracy Willette, they're making way for something new...but it won't be another building.

"That section is actually a cold storage barn. It was in disrepair and would have been an investment to fix, so we are having it torn down. The footprint of the space we are planning on repurposing for our Kids Cave before/after school program to use as needed outdoor space."

The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department's "Kids Cave" program currently serves about 125 kids.
"This project was budgeted in our capital, and the project cost is approximately $50,500 to demolish the barn and finish the site. "

Willette says the first phase of the project, the demolition, started this week.
