Bangor/Brewer Based Lego Robotics Team Sets Sights On Nationals
A small but mighty group of 3rd through 8th grade students from Bangor and Brewer recently won the State Title at a tournament with the First Lego League at Mount Blue High School in Farmington, and have set their sights at the upcoming Nationals Competition in Houston, Texas. They call themselves the Lego Legends (team #32423).
Heather Corbett's son Owen joined the team 2 years ago because he was interested in engineering and wanted to learn how to code.
"The first Lego league has 6 core values: fun, teamwork, inclusion, innovation, discovery and impact. We meet 2-3 times per week and leading up competition just about every day."
"Lego robotics allows these kids to develop their critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, innovation skills and public speaking skills. It also allows them to learn how to work together as a team."

This year's competition has an underwater theme, with a challenge called "Submerged."This year, the Lego Legends came up with a pretty innovative idea."During our robotics competition, we had to do a presentation in front of 2 judges to present our innovation project. Innovation projects this year had to be focused on a problem that we are facing in our oceans. Our innovation project is called the Ultimate Sorter and helps reduce bycatch in our oceans."
"Another part of our competition is building and coding a robot to complete missions to earn points in two and a half minutes. We also need to show that we are following First Lego League core values."
Corbett says the team competed against 33 other teams at states to win the opportunity to go to Nationals. They're looking for a little help to get there, too.
She says they have put together a GoFundMe page if people want to donate to this cause (you can click here to find that.)
"In my opinion, people should contribute to causes like this to help foster a love for STEM in our community’s youth. The National Competition in Houston will take place over the April Vacation from April 16th through the 19th.
