For as long as I can remember, checking out the big sign in front of Gifford's Ice Cream stand on Broadway in Bangor is just something I've always done.

Whether to check the weekly specials or to start the countdown for when the stand was going to open or close, I think I've stared at that thing hundreds of times.

But this week, when I drove by, I had to do a double take! The old sign, the one I've looked at for most of my life, now has a brand new, fancy, and updated appearance. And this sign "glow-up" if you will, comes just in time for Gifford's Bangor opening day.

Scheduled to kick off their new season at noon this St. Paddy's Day, there will no doubt be a long line of ice cream lovers waiting for a scoop of frozen goodness today.

The sign is not the first change Gifford's Ice Cream has made this season. Unfortunately, due to a fire at the beginning of February, the local company has been forced to get creative with how they're going to supply their local ice cream stands. Production at the plant in Skowhegan has been halted until they can rebuild and repair what was damaged.

So the folks from Gifford's are getting a hand from some fellow ice cream makers and close friends in Florida. They'll be using inventory from out of state, which will mean some of the favorites folks look for every year will be temporarily unavailable.

But rest assured, it will all taste good. And hopefully, before too long, Gifford's plant will be up and running and back to normal.
