The Orono Bog Boardwalk, or "The Bog Walk" as it is referred to by most, opened to the public on May 1st. Running right through the Bangor City Forest, the Bog Walk is no stranger to wildlife. Hawks, owls, rabbits, and foxes are often seen in the vicinity, along with snakes and small rodents. Sometimes, even deer make appearances in the area.

After all, it's a boardwalk built into nature, and that's the draw, right?

However, as we all know, crossing paths with a turtle versus crossing paths with a mama bear and her cubs carries a different set of risks.

So, erring on the side of caution, those managing the Bog Walk posted the warning on their Facebook Page as soon as they were alerted, letting those who would have ventured unknowingly into a risky situation know that the area would be closed instead, to give the family some distance and peace.

"Boardwalk CLOSED for the rest of today(6-4-25) because a mama bear and her 2 cubs were seen on the BW early this afternoon."

Now, it goes without saying that anyone venturing into the woods in Maine takes a certain risk of encountering wildlife, both big and small. But it's always a good idea, when you see something that poses a risk to others, to report it. And it was very appreciated that whoever spotted the bear reported it, so that steps could be taken to keep both people and animals safe.
