Burnham Woman Indicted In Crash That Killed Newport Man Last July
A woman from Penobscot County has turned herself in to authorities after receiving an indictment earlier this week in connection with the death of a man from Newport.
The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office says a Grand Jury indicted 40-year-old Jessica McCarthy of Burnham for Manslaughter and OUI. They say she was under the influence the night of July 5th, 2024, when the truck she was driving went off the road and ran into a tree, trapping McCarthy and her passenger, 29-year-old Dean Long of Newport.
The crash occurred just after midnight on the Mullen Road in Stetson.
"Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputies, Criminal Investigation Division, as well as members of the Crash Reconstruction Team, responded, where they found a lone truck had left the road and crashed into a tree, trapping two occupants. Lifesaving efforts were made, but unfortunately, Dean Long,..was pronounced deceased on the scene.
During this lengthy investigation, which involved the execution of several search warrants and interviews by the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, this crash was presented to the Grand Jury on 01/29/25."
After turning herself in, McCarthy made bail and was released from the Penobscot County Jail.
