Check It Out: The New Bangor Area Transit Center Opens Friday

Since the announcement back in December 2020 that Bangor would be building a brand-new transit center, crews have been steadily working toward making the concept a reality. And they're getting close to realizing the fruits of all that labor.

According to Courtney O’Donnell, the assistant city manager of Bangor, there will be an official Grand Opening Celebration this coming Friday afternoon at 1 PM.

The Transit Center has a price tag of $3.45 million dollars, which is being provided through grants, the City, and the Community Connector.

Along with Council Chair Rick Fournier, Sen. Susan Collins, who was instrumental in getting some of the funding for the project,  will also be on hand to speak.

O'Donnell says tours of the new facility will be given after the ceremony, for anyone who wants to see how it all turned out.

"The building will serve as the central bus hub for the transit system and is the first upgrade since Bangor’s bus depot was first built in 1989. The Bangor Area Transit Center will offer improved accessibility and facilities for riders to enjoy, as well as facilities for the Transit drivers."

Work began on the new center in the summer of 2021. It will serve as the hub for the Community Connector, the public transit system that runs through and around Bangor.

The Connector services 5 different towns aside from Bangor, including Brewer, Orono and the University of Maine,  Hampden, Old Town, and Veazie, too.

O'Donnell says the Community Connector will start operating from the new center next week.

"Services are expected to remain at Broad Street Park until Wednesday, December 14, 2022, as the contractors work to finish any outstanding items to ensure a completed facility for bus patrons."
