Search Is On For Father/Daughter Missing From Mt. Katahdin In Baxter State Park
A father and daughter from New York, last seen at the summit of Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park, have gone missing.
Baxter State Park Rangers along with other emergency rescue personnel have been searching the park since the duo went missing this weekend.
According to the Baxter State Park, the last place anyone saw the pair was around the area of the Katahdin Tablelands Sunday.
"Tim Keiderling, age 58, and his daughter Esther Keiderling, age 28, both of Ulster Park, New York had left Abol Campground on Sunday to hike to the summit of Katahdin. They were last seen at approximately 10:15 a.m. heading towards the summit.
Baxter State Park Rangers began searching yesterday morning (Monday, June 1) after discovering that the Keiderling’s vehicle was still in the day-use parking lot. Baxter Park Rangers actively searched the Abol Trail the Hunt Trail, including the Katahdin Tablelands, and found no sign of the father and daughter."
Representatives for the park say the search was widened Tuesday. They have a Warden K-9 team working with several dozen members of the Maine Warden Service and the Maine Forest Service. They've even been utilizing infrared thermal imaging devices used by Maine Army National Guard helicopter units and the search.
Authorities say they have closed the Hunt and Abol Trails on the mountain and will continue the search throughout the day with the rescue crews they have working the case, but so far there's no trace of the pair.
They will regroup later to see if another search expansion, utilizing volunteers, in necessary. They are encouraging anyone who might have been hiking in the area of Mt. Katahdin's summit on Sunday to reach out to the Houlton State Police with any information they think might be helpful in locating the Keiderlings. The number to the Houlton State Police is 207-532-5400.
