Some might say that the Bangor Opera House on Main Street is both beautiful and creepy, and they wouldn't be wrong.

According to one online sources, this "Little Broadway of the North" as it was nicknamed, has seen more than it's fair share of drama, and might have some lingering scars to show for it.

"Not long after it was built, the 19th-century opera house was destroyed in a fire. It was rebuilt in 1920 as an Egyptian-art deco vaudeville house that hosted celebrities like Oscar Wilde and Mae West. Perhaps unsurprisingly given its turbulent history, the opera house is also well-known as a haunted locale. It reportedly has three ghosts in residence and has been featured on ghost-hunting television shows."

Bangor's own Penobscot Theater Company acquired the historic venue in the late 1990s, and has been working hard to restore it to it's original glory.

While the building itself has received a bit of a facelift, there's no amount of work that could be done to erase some of history those rock walls have seen throughout the years. And some of those memories linger in more just old stories, but apparitions and unexplained occurrences as well.

You can take a tour of Bangor's Haunted Theatre, led by one of Penobscot Theatre's own ensemble actors, Ben Laymen.

Local television station, WABI, even did a 2-part series on the place a few years past.

You can check that out right here.

Or, you can hear for yourself from one young local actor who has spent the past few years both on stage and back stage, working performances for Penobscot Theatre. 12-year-old Miles Green-Hamman has had his own encounter with a ghost back stage. His story was even featured in a recent episode of The Discovery Channel's show Expedition X.

As young Miles tells the story, he was backstage, waiting for his cue during one of Penobscot Theatre's 2024 performances of "A Christmas Carol," when it happened.

"A ghost kind of put their hand on my shoulder. We were doing a production of 'A Christmas Carol' and I turned around and there was nobody behind me. Everyone else was at least 5 feet away from me....they couldn't have run straight behind me and then straight back to where they were sitting. I was so confused because that was the first time I had ever had that ghost experience. And once you have that first ghost experience, it's really mind boggling...because you don't know what happened."

Miles says the hand squeezed his shoulder and felt cold.

"I was just standing there for a hot 5 seconds wondering 'What on Earth just happened?' and then I turned to my friend across the way and ask 'Did you just touch me?' and they said 'No, why would I do that?' "

Sara Green-Hamman, Miles' mom, said when her son came home and told him what had happened, she encouraged Miles to reach out to Ben Layman, who himself had experienced his own ghostly phenomena in the building, and his reaction to the story...

You've just had your first ghost experience at the Penobscot Theatre.

Mile's story is one of a handful collected by folks at the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, and then passed along to the producers of the 'Expedition X' show when they came to town this May to record the episode. Miles even got to star in the reenactment of another famous Bangor ghost story about a boy who fell from the Thomas Hill Standpipe in the 1940s.
