#Hashtag Hometown of the Week: Castine

Every week we feature a new hometown and share photos and facts using hashtags on social media. This week our #hashtag hometown is Castine!

Castine is one of the most historic towns in the state with a long history of land disputes, battles, and a few name changes. Today it thrives as a busy area for summer tourism and the home of Maine Maritime Academy.

Local attractions include the site of Fort George, Dyce Head Light, Castine Harbor, Witherly Mermorial Library, The Wilson Museum, and even the post office, which is one of the oldest post offices in the U.S. to never cease services.

Less that 1,500 people live in the 20.01 square miles that Castine covers. The town is surrounded on 3 sides by water, the Penobscot and Bagaduce Rivers merge around Castine. It give you the feeling of being on an island without the inconvenience of actually living on an island! The folks that live here are typically very friendly and welcoming as many also run local shops in the summer.
