This week, the town of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island added itself to the list of Maine municipalities that have either restricted or banned outright the use of plastic bags by retailers.

The Bangor Daily News reported this week that Tuesday's plastic bag ban in Southwest Harbor puts it squarely in the column of complete bans. Other towns just restrict the use of bags, usually in the form of a five cent fee per bag.

Towns that have a complete ban on single-use bags at retail stores:

  • Belfast
  • Blue Hill
  • Brunswick
  • Camden
  • Damariscotta
  • Freeport (plastic banned)
  • Kennebunk
  • Manchester
  • Newcastle
  • Rockland
  • Saco
  • Waterville
  • York

Towns that restrict the use of bags with a five cent fee:

  • Cape Elizabeth
  • Falmouth
  • Freeport (paper bag fee)
  • Portland
  • South Portland
  • Topsham

The cities of Bangor and Ellsworth are currently considering bans, but haven't enacted them yet. All other Maine cities and towns not listed here allow
