It’s Back! After A 2-Year Hiatus, The Literacy Tea Will Be In Person This Year
It's been two years since the folks at Literacy Volunteers of Bangor have been able to hold their biggest fundraiser, "The Marvin And Sheri Glazier Literacy Tea" at John Bapst Memorial High School.
Executive Director Mary Taylor of LVB says they were all ready to host the event in March of 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they had to cancel the tea two years in a row. They did hold an online event in its place, but nothing beats the fun of dressing up, eating savory snacks, and exploring the beautiful books and tables at an in-person tea.
Taylor says they are so excited to be able to offer this, their 8th Annual Literacy Tea at Bapst again this year.
"Children and adults alike will enjoy not only the performance and the reading, but also really good food, in terms of sweets and savories, and of course tea, which is provided by Tea Mania of Winterport. Each of the tables that people are seated at is decorated around a different children's book, that they'll probably recognize. These tables just really come alive with these decorations."
This year, Taylor says they will have a special guest speaker in attendance.
"We invite a Maine children's author to present or perform their book. And the audience is made up of people of all ages. Good literature is good literature, so we choose accessible books for all ages and that's why we invite a Maine children's author...We're so pleased to have Amy MacDonald. She lives in Southern Maine and she wrote 'Little Beaver and The Echo' and I think it's really an appropriate book. The theme is around loneliness and isolation and creating friends, so I think there's a real connection to what we're living through. And really to reconnect with people, which is why we're here. "
Taylor says they will also be auctioning off a piece of one-of-a-kind artwork done by Maine artist, Larry Clifford, at this year's Literacy Tea.
The Literacy Tea will take place on Sunday, June 5 from 3 PM to 5 PM. Tickets are on sale for $25 and are only available in advance. They will not be selling any at the door.
