Even though ticks have always been a problem in Maine, I don't remember my parents ever making a big deal about them when I was a kid.

Yes, if one of us got a tick on us my parents were always quick to get it off us before it burrowed into our skin, but I don't remember there being a fuss over checking us for ticks when we came in from playing outside.

These days, the concerns about ticks are much different.

It is now widely known that tick bites can spread all kinds of nasty illnesses.  In some cases, these illnesses can even be deadly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, there are several dangerous illnesses and bacterias that can be spread through tick bites.  These include Lyme Disease, Bourbon Virus, Heartland Virus, and the deadly Powassan Virus.

Where in Maine Are You Most At Risk For a Tick Bite?

While there are several types of ticks that are common in Maine, most people are concerned with deer ticks.  These are the nasty ones that are often associated with spreading the worst illnesses.

I always assumed the greatest number of these critters were found in the deepest woods of Maine.  The Allagash, for example.  However, that is not the case.

According to Maine.gov, you can find ticks in all parts of the state, but the deer ticks are most common along the southern coastline.

Second to the southern coastline, you'll find a number of deer ticks in Western Maine and Central Maine.

We've put together a list of the counties where you are most likely to get bit by a tick.  Keep in mind that not the entire county is a hotbed for ticks.  For example, in Cumberland County, you are probably not going to encounter a tick on Fore Street, but you'll probably see one in Deering Oaks Park.
