Maine Is One of the Best States for Teen Drivers

Getting your driver’s license is a pretty big deal when you’re a teenager. It means more freedom, no more asking your parents for rides, and probably a few nervous moments for whoever is sitting in the passenger seat.

And if you’re learning to drive in Maine, you’re apparently in a pretty good place to do it.

Maine Makes the Top 10

According to WalletHub, Maine ranks as the 10th-best state in the country for teen drivers. The study compared all 50 states using 23 different factors, including teen driver fatalities, insurance costs, car repairs, road conditions and driving laws.

Maine actually took the number one spot in a few categories. The state ranked first for the average cost of car repairs, distracted-driving and texting laws, and graduated licensing laws for teen drivers.

Maine also ranked seventh for teen driver fatalities per 100,000 teens and seventh for occupant-protection laws.

Where Maine Didn't Do So Great

Of course, Maine wasn't at the top of every category.

The state ranked 29th for teen DUIs per 100,000 teens and 30th for vehicle miles traveled per capita. Maine also came in 19th for road quality, which probably won't surprise anyone who's spent enough time dodging potholes.

Still, a top-10 finish isn't bad at all. For Maine parents handing over the keys this summer, that's at least one thing that might make the experience a little less nerve-racking.
