There’s an Active 40-Day Boycott on Target Stores in Maine
There have been several economic boycotts of chains both locally in Maine and nationwide, but this one specifically ‘targets’ Target stores.

Lately, we've seen different groups organize single-day boycotts of major retailers, calling them ‘economic blackouts.’ But this takes that idea to a whole new level, stretching beyond just one day and aiming for a much bigger impact.

Well, having said all that, why are folks boycotting Target stores, and why 40 days in particular? That seems so specific and ‘targeted,’ right?
CNN reports that Target is facing a 40-day consumer boycott that began on March 5th, sparked by concerns over the company’s retreat from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Target recently eliminated minority hiring goals and disbanded an executive committee focused on racial justice.
The boycott was launched by Rev. Jamal Bryant, an Atlanta-area megachurch pastor, who criticized Target for turning its back on marginalized communities.
The boycott starts at the beginning of Lent, lasting 40 days to align with the religious season.
It comes at a tough time for Target, just weeks after changes to its DEI programs and while dealing with economic struggles and new tariffs.
The company says it remains committed to inclusivity while adapting to external pressures, but critics argue it is bowing to conservative influence.
Many major corporations, including Target, are navigating a difficult balance between advancing diversity efforts and responding to legal and political challenges.
So, there you have it! That’s why people are boycotting Target locations across the country and here in Maine.
