A traffic stop in Calais ended with a suspect being shot by a police officer and a sheriff's deputy.

Maine Law Enforcement-involved Shooting in Calais Began as a Traffic Stop

Abinadi White, 35, encountered law enforcement at the intersection of North and Main Streets in Calais on Friday.

Officials have not released information about what precipitated the traffic stop, but White was told he was under arrest once he was off his motorcycle.

Maine Law Enforcement Allegedly Tried to Subdue a Suspect in Calais Before Shooting

According to the Calais Police Department, Mr. White refused to follow the commands of the deputies and Calais Police Officers on the scene.

Officers tried to tase the suspect, but were unsuccessful.

At this point, the law enforcement personnel advanced on Mr. White and tried to take him into custody, but he allegedly grabbed a sword and swung it at them.

Officer Charles Ball and Washington County Sheriff's Department Deputy Taylor Leblanc then fired at White, injuring him.

He was transported to Calais Regional Hospital and then taken by Life Flight to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where his condition was stabilized.

Both Officer Ball and Deputy Leblanc have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Maine Attorney General's Office, standard procedure in all law enforcement-involved shootings.

Abinadi White will be charged with:

  • Failure to stop
  • Operating after suspension
  • Failure to submit to arrest
  • Criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
