According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred around 6 PM, when dispatchers received a harrowing call, and first responders were rushed to a property on Stetson Road in Kenduskeag.

"Initial reports indicated that a 3-year-old boy had been accidentally run over by a riding lawn tractor and sustained life-threatening injuries. A deputy from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office and local firefighters responded immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders initiated lifesaving measures and provided emergency medical care until the child could be transported for advanced treatment."

The child was initially transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center so a medical team there could stabilize him. He was later taken by LifeFlight to a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

We're told he remains there in critical condition.

Authorities say that they're not releasing any other details at this time, out of respect to all involved, including emergency personnel who responded to the scene, and those currently treating the child. They are also asking that everyone keep the child, the family, and first responders in their thoughts at this traumatic time.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that over 35,000 Americans suffer power mower-related injuries annually, while broader historical studies log roughly 85,000 annual emergency room visits. It's thought that between 8,000 and 10,000 of those are children.

Our thoughts are with the child, their family, and all those in the community who have been affected by this heartbreaking event.
