One of the unfortunate byproducts of this imposed "social distancing" is the paranoia you feel when anyone outside of your small isolation circle stops in front of your house.

I was sitting at the makeshift classroom area of my living room this morning, helping my two middle girls get their assignments done, when this black truck pulled up and parked in front of my driveway.

Suspicious as to what in the world that person was doing there, I got up and looked out the glass storm door, hollering to my kids that they all better stay put.

Then I saw him; out from the truck popped this sweet looking man (whom I recognized as local hair stylist Guy Ortega from Salon Bonifacio) carrying a bright blue balloon, which he tied to my neighbors front railing.

My paranoia disarmed, I ventured out to my front stoop and asked "Is it someone's birthday? How sweet!" To which he replied, "No. Just trying to spread some happiness."

I wondered if he was doing it on behalf of his salon? He said no, as he tied a bright yellow balloon to my stair-rail while my kids looked on from the door.

He said the balloons were from Bangor Floral, whom he also works for. It was their way of brightening the day for local folks.

Then he hopped into his truck and made his way down the road, stopping at another neighbors house to share a balloon with her.

It was a sweet little gesture that brought a smile to the faces of all the neighbors on my block.

So if you come across a balloon on your front steps today, take a moment to remember all of those local business, who are suffering like the rest of us--but are choosing to persevere and spread light in spite of it all.

Thanks, for the smiles guys!
