Harrington Man, 75, Arrested On Arson Charges After Main Street Fire

What was initially reported as an accidental fire that spread after an outdoor burn got out of control has now been determined to have been intentionally set, following an investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office.

Firefighters from Harrington, along with members of the Maine State Forest Service, responded to a structure fire at 1230 Main Street in Harrington on July 16th,

Initially, crews were told that the fire was the result of an outdoor burn that had gotten out of control and caught the house on fire. They called the Fire Marshal's Office in to help, and that story was soon dismissed.

According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, the fire was in fact the result of arson.

"Investigators with the Office of State Fire Marshal responded to the scene and conducted a comprehensive investigation, including a detailed scene examination and numerous witness interviews...

During the course of the investigation, investigators determined that the fire was incendiary and not accidentally caused by outdoor burning.

Based on the evidence developed during the investigation, investigators obtained an arrest warrant charging Arthur Langley, age 75, of Harrington, with Arson and Reckless Conduct."

Langley was located 12 days later in the town of Columbia and arrested.

He is being held without bail at the Washington County Jail until he makes his first appearance in court.

Authorities say they are still looking into the matter.
