Maine Can’t Stop Eating the Worst Rated Brand of Bacon in the US

Bacon should be a religion.

I don't care if that sentence made any sense or not, but it's true. Bacon is the gift that people give themselves for having to survive X-number of days without bacon. It's a reward from the Universe to make up for all the other bad things that happen in the world. Unless of course, you're vegetarian. Then you will utterly disagree with everything I just said, understandably.

But the rest of us, we worship bacon to the degree that bacon is at the apex of pork prices, while all the other tasty parts are practically free because the demand for one part of a hog is greater than all the other parts combined. Bacon is as American as apple pie. So why would you ever eat crap bacon?

Mainers eat a LOT of what's considered the worst bacon in America.

According to 24/7 Wall Street, there are 6 brands in particular that kind of set the bar the lowest. Smithfield brand, for instance scores very low on the list. Or high depending on how you see it. Wright brand as well. But the worst rated brand of all, is one we see every day. That title belongs to Great Value brand bacon, which is exclusive to Walmart.

Online reviews give it about 2.5 stars at best. And there are tons of 1 star reviews at Walmart.com. Now, you do have plenty of other options to check out. We have any number of solid chain grocery stores, as well as smaller mom and pop stores that carry fantastic options. But given the Walmart price point, it's hard not to buy the cheap stuff.

What were the chief complaints?

Many in the reviews pointed out the bacon was fatty. Others said the packaging was often damaged. And still others pointed out potential freshness issues. there were also complaints that it was sliced extremely thin. Bacon thickness is important. Sure, the thinner stuff cooks nice and fast, but speed shouldn't trump flavor.

There are 22 Walmart locations around Maine, so it's not hard to find Great Value bacon. But again, there are times in life where it's just better to spend a few extra bucks, rather than suffer with un-tasty food.
