We never thought that Maine was anything like the country of Bulgaria.  Apparently it is.

As of 2014, the State of Maine's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was equal to that of Bulgaria, a country just north of Greece that borders the Black Sea in Eastern Europe.

According to an article in The Daily Mail, Maine's GDP was almost $56 billion and Bulgaria's shaped up to be about the same.

That ain't bad.  Maine's population of of 2014 was 1.33 million and Bulgaria has a population of 7.4 million.  Sounds like there's a bunch of unproductive Bulgarians on the planet.

Bulgaria is a democracy with a market-based economy.

Looking at the map above, you can see where our county's production lies, with California's GDP the size of Brazil and Texas having the GDP of Canada.
