Here’s Why You Might Want a Cannabis Med Card vs. Maine’s Legal Market

Weed has been legal for a minute here in Maine.

In some form or other, Maine has had legal weed on the books for over a decade at this point. First of course, with the legalization of medical cannabis here in the state. And of course in 2016, we went full-on with legal recreational weed. Many other states also have legalized, but Maine has been lax about it long before that.

For years, we'd decriminalized it to the point that there wasn't really a whole lot to worry about. If you got busted with a reasonable amount within Maine's guidelines, all you got was a ticket. No arrests, no jail time, none of that like we see in other states. Just a simple fine and you were on your way.

There are no shortage of places to buy weed in Maine.

It seems like you can't turn around in a circle wherever you're standing, and see a cannabis dispensary somewhere. Many towns jumped right on the bandwagon and allowed dispensaries of all shapes and sizes. We've definitely embraced our weed culture. There's even a cannabis themed/friendly campground you can go to.

But that brings us to a point. There are two types of dispensaries, medical and recreational. They both sell the same product, for all intents and purposes. But there are some differences. The differences mostly revolve around money. In both directions. One way saves you money, the other saves the dispensary money.

There are definitely pros and cons to both.

I imagine the big reason people open medical dispensaries at this point, is that it must be cheaper. Oddly enough, med dispensaries aren't required to have their products tested in Maine, but the rec ones are. So when you buy Rec weed, it's arguably a safer product. Med products didn't fare so well in a recent sample taken around the state. Rec dispensaries did fine.

On the other hand, keeping a med card can give you some serious savings. To the tune of up to 40% compared to rec prices. And these days, getting a med card is almost laughably easy. At the end of the day, it's up to what works best for you. There's also some dispensaries that serve both med and rec, so you know their products have passed muster with the state. But again... It's all about you.
