Scarborough police have released the name of a transient who was distracted and struck by Amtrak's Downeaster train this past Sunday morning.

Charles Hope, 36, a transient from California, who was recently staying in Massachusetts, remains hospitalized at Maine Medical Center in Portland with life threatening injuries.

Eye witnesses say that Hope was crossing the tracks trying to make his way to a freight train parked on the other side when he was hit by the front of the Downeaster.

The incident happened at 8:15am Sunday. The speed limit along that section of the track is 60mph.  The train was delayed for about 90 minutes before eventually making its way to Boston.
