Maine State Police Bloodhound ‘Millie’ Rescues 5-Year-Old In Water
For the second time in a week, Maine's working rescue dogs have come in clutch when we've most needed them!
Last week, a Maine Warden Service K-9 named Koda helped locate a missing 2-year-old in Jay.
On Friday, when another child went missing in Palermo, a Maine State Police Bloodhound named Millie saved the day.
According to authorities, the 10-month-old bloodhound is making great use of her incredible dedication and skilled nose.
"On May 16, 2025, around 5:30 PM in the woods off Rowe Rd. in Palermo, MSP bloodhound Millie and her handler, Corporal Eric Sucy, alongside Maine Game Warden Julia Horst, located a missing 5-year-old girl with autism in a cedar swamp—waist-deep in water but thankfully uninjured. Millie tracked a 0.33-mile scent trail from the girl’s home."
According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, the State Police have 25 certified K-9 Teams comprised of a trained dog and handler.
"The K-9 Training Center is located adjacent to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, in Vassalboro, Maine. Our teams are available 24 hours/day and respond to many types of calls in all weather conditions. Teams are also available to assist other agencies in the State of Maine."
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has 8 K-9 Units teams trained in specialized areas like tracking, evidence location, hasty air scent search, and locating human remains.
"The Maine Warden Service K9 team travels throughout Maine and across the state’s borders to bring missing persons to safety and to protect our natural resources through evidence collection...Handlers work side by side with their trusted K9s. "

Often, these valuable members of Maine's rescue services live with their handlers, alongside their families, even when they are no longer working for the state.
