Construction To Begin On New Newport, Maine Roundabout Next Month
If your daily commute takes you through the intersection of Route 3 and Route 7 in Newport, get ready for some changes.
The Maine DOT says the folks from Gordon Contracting out of Sangerville are set to start work on a $7-Million dollar project to create a roundabout in that area. The hope is this will improve the safety of those who travel the roads in that area. This particular stretch of road has been the site of numerous collisions over the years and the MDOT hopes this roundabout will reduce that number.
Officials say they expect construction to start on Monday, April 14th with a detour starting that day as well.
"This work will involve the full closure of Route 2 at Route 7 within the project area. Construction will begin 0.04 miles East of Lovely Drive and extend East for 0.22 Miles...Through-traffic on Route 2 will be detoured to High Street and Banks Road. Local traffic on Route 2 can access businesses using High Street. Through-traffic on Route 11 will still be able to pass through the intersection. "
The detour will be in place until November of this year. The entire project should be completed by 2026.

Anyone wanting more information or details about this project is encouraged to come to an Open House style meeting on Tuesday, April 1st from 5-7 PM at the Public Safety Building at 21 Water Street in Newport.
Officials will be on hand to explain the scope, timeline, and specifics of the project. You can also reach out to the Maine DOT by calling 207-215-9297.
