Folks with the Bangor Humane Society have spent the better part of this year prepping for their 32nd Annual "Paws On Parade" fundraiser.

The popular fundraising event is set to make its return to the Bangor Waterfront this year, but Bangor Humane Society Director Kathryn Ravenscraft says they have had to make one major last-minute change to this weekend's event, and ask that pet owners leave their dogs at home.

"Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no dogs in attendance, whether on foot, in carriers, or in strollers. People paws only."

Ravenscraft says the call was made to protect pets, as the risk of transmission is on the rise and a recent outbreak of parvovirus has area vets inundated with sick pooches.

The shelter's Executive Director, Suzan Pendergast, says a difficult decision was made out of respect to the bond between people and their pets, with an understanding of how important pet health is to their owners.

"Paws on Parade has always been about coming together to support animals in need. This year, that means show our love for our pets by keeping them safe at home. "

Each year over 2000 animals across the state rely on the services the Bangor Humane Society provides, so the fundraising efforts are still key. Pendergast says people are still welcome to come visit the many vendors and food trucks they have lined up for the day, and are encouraged to walk as they would have, just without their dogs in tow.

Folks with cats and other small animals that had planned to come can still bring those, if they are comfortable, and are "encouraged to bring in their backpacks or carriers."

Paws On Parade, without dogs, will take place on the Bangor Waterfront on Saturday, October 4th, with registration starting at 10 AM and the walk kicking off at 10:30 AM.
