One of Eastern Maine's most underrated gem of a walking trail is the Orono Bog Boardwalk.

Accessible through the Bangor City Forest, off of Stillwater Avenue, the 'Bog Walk', as it is often referred to, is a mile loop through multiple plant and animal species.

It is lined with an easy-to-traverse boardwalk that is manageable for strollers and wheelchairs alike and is peppered with incredibly informative placards that tell all about the vegetation and wildlife one might see at any given time along their walk.

Typically, the Bog Walk opens for the season on May 1st.

The hours from the point it opens until Labor Day are 7 AM to 6:30 PM.

They start to cut back a bit through September, open from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

After Daylight Saving Time, the hours of operations are shortened by another hour, going from 8 AM to 4:30 PM.

According to the folks who run the Orono Bog Boardwalk, if the weather cooperates, people can enjoy walking the trail during daylight hours until the end of the month, but with another reduction in time.

"If the weather holds with no snow and ice, we will close for the 2024 season the weekend after Thanksgiving, Nov. 30 or Dec. 1. We are open 8:00 am to 3:30 pm daily."

When the temperatures drop, the boardwalk at the Bog Walk can frost over and become slick, so use caution on colder mornings, if you plan to visit early before the sun's had time to melt it.
