Renovations Of Bangor’s City Hall Coming Along Right On Schedule
Anyone traveling through Downtown Bangor has likely noticed the layers of scaffolding that have gone up around Bangor's City Hall building.
Since 2019, the historic building has received a complete overhaul and rebuilding of both its front steps and the stairs along the back of the facility.
Last year the Bangor City Council announced it would start the process of a major renovation project to the inside of the building, which required a temporary relocation of many of the City's Department Offices, including Code Enforcement, Assessing, the City Clerk, and the City's Superintendent's office to a location on Harlow Street.

The building officially closed to the public in December of 2023, with work beginning shortly thereafter.
Contractors have been very busy since then, gutting the bottom floor of the building and constructing the newly designed floorplan. The new space will aim to give residents more of a 'one-stop' experience by combining the more front-facing customer offices such as the Treasury Department and City Clerk.
Other items to be addressed during this renovation include the complete update of the HVAC system throughout the building, the relocation of City Council Chambers from the 3rd floor down to the 1st, and the addition of new boilers and a new elevator.
The City’s Interim Director of Engineering Jefferson Davis says the project is progressing nicely.
"All demolition work has been completed at City Hall and the contractor has framed in the first floor and has begun insulation and drywall work. The majority of the mechanical and plumbing work has been done. The elevator pit has been dug and the elevator pit concrete walls are being poured this week. "
Davis says the project, which has a price tag of about 9 million dollars, is estimated to be complete in the spring of 2025.
