Authorities say a head-on collision in Clifton this weekend, that sent multiple people to the hospital with serious injuries, was the result of impaired driving.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office says the crash took place just before 8 PM Saturday, on the Airline Road, known to most as Route 9 in the area of Chick Hill Rd.

Authorities say when they arrived on the scene, they found a female driver trapped inside a black SUV. She was badly hurt, they say, and had to be extracted by the Eddington Fire Department, and Lifeflighted to Northern Light EMMC.

The Sherrif's Office says there was also a truck involved. 3 of the passengers from that vehicle were also taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries.

Police had that area of road shut down for a long while as authorities worked to look into the details of what happened, and clean up the wreckage.

"An investigation at the scene, aided by the use of a FARO scanner to collect evidence, determined that the driver of a Ford pickup truck had crossed the centerline, causing the collision with the SUV. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Kyle Gray, 19, of Harborside, was arrested and charged with the following: Operating Under the Influence Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (Class C), Aggravated Driving to Endanger (Class C)
Operating Without a License Beyond Restrictions (Class E)."

They say Gray was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and given a blood test after they obtained a warrant.

Members of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, Eddington Fire & Rescue, and the Holden Fire Department assisted in the effort.

Gray was eventually taken to the Penobscot County Jail where he remains at this time.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
