Skowhegan State Fair Begins Thursday – Visit The 4H Barn
Skowhegan State Fair begins this Thursday the 11th and runs for 10 days.
The fair has all that you expect in a Fair.
Food & fun galore. Rides, Games, Arts & Crafts, you know the drill. But also a 4 H program.
Meet Morgan. Morgan is 17, and a senior at Maine Virtual Academy and she is involved in 4H Here she is the day she got her project, 6 month old steer Potato. She bought him for $800 and has raised him with love.
She spends 2 to 3 hours every day, 7 days a week caring for her Potato. Feeding, Grooming, Caring for him and telling him to gain weight.
He tips the scales at 1,300 pounds. And of course that is important because at the 4H Auction at the Skowhegan Fair he doesn't get bid on based on his pretty face. It’s all about the weight.
The expectation is that he might sell for $3,900 or more, all dependent on the bids he receives.
Any profit that she does make on the sale of Potato will go towards her college fund. So bid early and bid often.
Meet Potato again.
May I guess your first question? Mine was how did Potato get his name. Morgan’s Mom Terri answered
When she got pictures from his breeder, he had an ear tag that she thought said Potato. It actually said Patch. She decided to go with Potato.
Morgan will be auctioning off her market steer on August 19th at the Skowhegan Fair. That begins at 6:30. And before that, on the 15th there is a Market Animal Show where she will have to show Potato. That starts at 4 p.m.
Okay everybody. Enjoy everything the Fair has to offer. Including Morgan’s beautiful boy Potato.
Plus all of the local Maine Agricultural Youth. Locally grown hogs, steers, beef, lamb, turkey and more. Support the local kids who have worked so hard on their projects.
