Tradewinds convenience stores across the state are about to come under new ownership.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Energy North s purchasing a number of Tradewinds locations from Chuck and Belinda Lawrence, including " stores in Ellsworth, Orland, Veazie, Hampden, Brewer, Old Town, Eddington and Bangor. "

The Lawrence Family started in the supermarket business, over 20 years ago, when the very first Tradewinds supermarket opened in Blue Hill. Expanding first as a locally owned supermarket chain, then into over a dozen convenience stores, the Lawrence family has gained quite a reputation for their involvement and support of the communities around them. While the family plans to keep their two supermarkets in Blue Hill and in Calais, they have turned over the convenience store operation to Energy North, with the understanding that the new company will keep that community involvement, which the Lawrence Family is so well known for.

"The new owner will continue the Lawrence family’s Pumped Up to Fight Cancer initiative by donating a penny per gallon of gasoline for cancer treatment."

Energy North, which also operates other convenience stops across New England, will not be changing the Tradewinds name.

Along with their philanthropic endeavors, the Lawrence Family has also had a reputation for partnering with Maine based companies like Elaine's Bakery, Gifford's Ice Cream and The Fox Family Potato Chip Inc. No word yet if Energy North will continue that tradition.
