Specialty Sweets In Bangor To Close For Good
Specialty Sweets announced on their Facebook page today, that they are closing at the end of the month. This comes on the heels of closing their downtown location at the beginning of the year.
Also, couple that with the fact that things are changing out by the mall area, and fewer people are coming in the door than before. Plus, owners Eliza and Wade Butler have seen a significant increase in the cost of doing business. Between rising food costs and minimum wage increases, they could no longer keep up.
"Unfortunately, the store has been unable to cover expenses for quite some time," Eliza Butler said in a news release via the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, "and we can no longer keep the store operating."
Let me be the first to tell you ... owning your own business is no joke. I've owned two restaurants in my years before radio, and there's a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that go into it. You get paid last after everyone, you sweat the increase in costs with decreases in traffic. Those things are hard to deal with every day.
They anticipate selling out of their remaining inventory pretty quickly, and they will be wrapping up production in the next couple days. So if there's a treat of theirs that you particularly love, you may want to get in there right away. From that point, they will be looking to sell everything. Equipment to furniture, it's all gotta go.
It's sad to see any business close. Especially one such as Specialty Sweets that's brought a lot of delicious joy to this area for many years. It truly has been a Bangor institution. Best of luck to the Butlers in whatever tickles their fancy next!
