For many in Maine, picking strawberries is a synonymous with summer as apple picking is with fall.

Those ripe, red berries, sweet from the farm; is there anything better?!

In Maine, our strawberry picking season is pretty short, usually running from mid-June to mid-July.

So it's a good idea to start planning your trip to a local strawberry farm now, so you'll be ready to go when the pickin's perfect!

There are few things to keep in mind this year, as you head out to pick your fill:

1.) The early worm gets the reward!

Often the berries are the sweetest in the morning sun. Not only is it best to go early in the day so you get the strawberries at their sweetest, but farms are often picked out by the middle of the day or on weekends, so if you can, opt for a day at the beginning of the week, and get out in the fields in the morning.

2.) Checking ahead can save you a hassle.

Sometimes farms close for a day or so, depending on how much has been picked over, to let the next batch of berries ripen up. Also, we all know how much of a factor weather can play in outdoor activities in Maine. Calling the farm or checking their website or social media pages in advance of you heading out the door might just save you a trip to a farm that's unexpectedly had to close.

3.) Pack accordingly.

Bug spray and layers are a great idea for a day of strawberry picking, but so are containers to put the berries in (if the farm hasn't provided one) or to transport them in so they don't roll around your vehicle on the way home can be helpful. Also, a good baby wipe or wash cloth to clean hands and faces after a pick or a sticky-sweet snack is a handy thing to have at the ready.

If you're looking for some pick-your-own spots that aren't too far outside of town, here are a few options for you this season.

Langley's Strawberries

Located in Hermon at 123 Crogan Road, Langley's Strawberry Farm will be opening for the season soon. According to one website, once opened for the season, they usually offer pick-you-own strawberries Monday through Sunday, 6 AM to 10 AM.

Treworgy Family Orchard

Located right off Union St. in Levant, with plenty of signs along the way to point you in the right direction. Treworgy Family Orchard is hoping to open for the pick-your-own strawberry season by June 20th.

This year they says they won't be selling strawberries outside of the farm at any farm stands, as they have in the past, as their crop is smaller. So if you want them from Treworgy's, you'll have to go to the farm to get them.

Of course they have a bunch of other treats to eat, and things to see/pet while you're at the farm, so you could definitely make a day of it the next time you visit.

Stutzman's Farm Stand & Bakery

The Stutzman farm in Sangerville (891 Douty Road) offers a bunch of pick-your-own options, not just strawberries. They also have beans, potatoes, squash, pumpkin and peas, once in season. According to their Facebook page, those berries should be ripening up nicely soon.

"The strawberries are in bloom, with some plants already bearing small green berries (huzzah!)."

You can also check this site for a list of other pick-your-own farms throughout the state.
