With life re-emerging after the winter season, new growth is happening in the plants around your home and yard.

If you have a pet it might be good to explore the area around your home where your pets may be to see what vegetation is around because there may some plants that could harm your pet.

The Federation of Maine Dog Clubs, responsible dog owners and breeders club in Maine, have a great list of things to be aware of when it comes to caring for your dog, including a list of plants that can harm your dog.  Some of these plants are native to Maine and New England, others are not native but may be grown here.

We combined this list with a great directory resource from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to make a tailored list of plants commonly seen in Maine yards or gardens that could also be poisonous to your dog.

Ingestion of some of the plants could cause diarrhea and vomiting, maybe excessive drooling or irritation.  But, some of these plants listed, which could be quite common for many landscapes here in Maine, could cause seizures, coma, heart attacks or death.

Take a look at this list and be sure to take a walk around your yard to know what is around your home to keep your pet safe during the spring, summer and autumn months here in Maine.
