Bangor Band Starts Its 165th Season Providing Music For The People Of Maine
New England's longest-running community band, the Bangor Band celebrated the kickoff to it's 165th year entertaining crowds with a concert at the Bangor Waterfront.
According to its website, the Bangor Band has had a long history of providing music to the people of Maine.
"In the winter of 1859, the first incarnation of the Bangor Band was formed under the direction of William Standish. Instruments were obtained from another recently defunct organization and a band was assembled. Billed as the Bangor Cornet Band (which was re-named in 1877 as the Bangor Band), the group performed in no fewer than sixty engagements during its first year, from cotillions to soirees to parades. "
"To date, the baton of the Bangor Band has been held by approximately twenty-six conductors. Membership has always been contingent on obtaining the best local musicians available, from all ages."
The next concert they're scheduled to play will be next Tuesday at the Bangor Public Library, with appearances to follow at the Collins Center for the Arts, Cascade Park, Chapin Park, the Veazie Community School and the Maine Savings Amphitheater.
Check the Bangor Band Facebook Page, for information on the venues, the appearances and if/ when there are rain dates planned.
These concerts are always free, but there is opportunity to make donations, which the band greatly appreciates.
The Bangor Band is made up of a score of talented, local musicians, and is led by a pair of local conductors, Philip Edelman and Scott Burditt.
While the lineup may change a bit from year to year, the entertainment they bring a crowd is consistent.
With a good mix of classics and some contemporary pieces, the Bangor band always rises to the occasion to provide great music to audiences young and old.
