The CDC changed the Covid-19 risk designation of Penobscot County Friday to Code Red, reflecting what they say is the highest level of risk for transmission of the virus.

Following that announcement, City of Bangor Officials released a statement that they would be reinstating the requirement that masks be worn at all times  in all City facilities until the risk designation is lowered again.

"In response to the change in the CDC’s designation of Penobscot County to Red (high risk level), effective May 9, 2022 all visitors to City facilities and passengers of the Community Connector will be asked to wear a face covering, regardless of vaccination status. Face coverings will be available for those who may need one.

The City will continue to follow CDC protocols. Should the CDC change the risk level to YELLOW or GREEN, the City will return to an optional masking policy."

Superintendent of Bangor Schools, James Tager, followed suit right after that, informing students, staff, and parents that all Bangor Schools will return to universal masking as well, starting at the beginning of next week.

“I want to reassure you that the entire Bangor School Department will continue to follow CDC protocols. We will review CDC recommendations weekly on Friday and keep parents and guardians informed of any changes. Should the CDC change the risk level to YELLOW or GREEN, the Bangor School Department will return to an optional masking policy. All staff are being extra diligent in their work to ensure that all safety protocols are followed and that students can continue in-person learning, activities, and enjoy end of the school year celebrations."

The Maine CDC says there are currently 29,104 people in Penobscot County with Covid-19, with 249,728 cases statewide.
