Bangor’s Holiday Tree To Go Up In Downtown This Week

Downtown Bangor will be looking a little more festive this week, as the City of Bangor's Holiday Tree is set to go up this Thursday morning.

Bangor's Public Information Coordinator, Angel Matson, released a statement Monday, explaining that getting the Holiday Tree up and decorated is truly a community effort.

"The tree, which was harvested in Glenburn, is being donated by Dan Sprague. Bangor Public Works crews will set the 39 foot balsam fir in place and secure it with the assistance of Hartt's Electric of Levant, who is volunteering their time and the use of a bucket truck for adding the lights to the tree."

If you want to check out the process, or plan to drive in that area of downtown, the tree is scheduled to go up at about 8AM, and the truck will likely need a little space to maneuver it into place.

In years past, Bangor's Holiday Tree has been officially lit during a public ceremony that takes place at the end of the Holiday Lights Parade. This year, because of concerns surrounding the Covid-19 Pandemic, the parade has been cancelled. So members of the Bangor Rotary will decorate and light the tree Saturday December 5th.

Also, as an alternative to the parade, residents and businesses in the downtown area are being encouraged to light up their storefronts and windows, so that folks passing through the area can take in the holiday sights from the safety of their own personal vehicles.

In fact, the Bangor Rotary, which typically puts on the Festival of Lights Parade, has joined forces with a number of other Bangor businesses and organizations, to sponsor a sort of Holiday Decoration Contest, called the "2020 Festival of Lights Community Competition." The contest will run from December 5th through January 2nd.
