Dexter Firefighters Aid Local Diver Recover Snow Sled That Went Through The Ice
Members of the Dexter Fire Department spent Thursday on the ice of Lake Wassookeag, helping a local diver retrieve a snowmobile that had gone through the ice and into the water earlier.
According to a social media post on their Facebook Page, firefighters assisted diver Greg Canders, who was called in to find the sled after two men went through the ice on the lake.
"There were a few hiccups along the way but the sled was back on the right side of the ice at 11:57. Greg certainly knows his stuff when it comes to recovering things from the cold waters, that’s for sure."
"This was a great training opportunity for sure. Orange cones have been placed on the lake to identify the area where the recovery holes are located."
The post went on to explain that the two men who had gone through the ice and ultimately lost the snowmobile underwater, were thankfully able to rescue themselves and escape the freezing waters, to make it home safely.
The diver and firefighters were able to locate where the snowmobile was beneath the water thanks to GPS coordinates.
No one was hurt during the initial incident or the rescue effort.
