For the price of one fancy coffee, you could help make sure local senior citizens will be able to eat well this holiday season.

As most of us have probably experienced a bit of sticker shock at the grocery store lately, with the price of everything rising significantly, so have the folks at the Eastern Area Agency on Aging, who operate a Meals on Wheels program for our older community members. The EAAA has also been impacted by the higher cost of food, so to make sure they can help all those seniors who need it this year, they're launching the Meals on Wheels “Holiday Gift Program”.

According to Dan Frye, Development Manager at EAAA, the program is very simple: every $5 donated to the Holiday Gift Program will go to sponsor, a special holiday meal for a Meals on Wheels recipient.

"EAAA’s Meal on Wheels Holiday Gift Program is dedicated to helping the most vulnerable older adults feel loved and appreciated. The Meals on Wheels program has witnessed a tremendous increase in services, almost tripling the number of home-delivered meals since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the help of 122 volunteers, Meals on Wheels currently serves 700 homebound older adults in 4 counties - Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Washington."

So if you and your co-workers, for instance, decided to skip one hot or cold specialty beverage, and instead pool what it would have cost you for that afternoon pick-me-up, just imagine how many local senior citizens would benefit from that kind gesture!

Donating is pretty easy, too. You can do it right online at EAAA.org. Or, for those of you who are old school, like I am, you can even mail out a check for your donation. Just make it out to Eastern Area Agency on Aging and put " Holiday Meals on Wheels" in the memo section. EAAA is located at 240 State St Brewer (04412.)
