Look at One of the Most Stunning and Unique Moths in New England
I really do love nature-y things.
While I don't spend as much time in the woods as a lot of people, mostly due to allergies and an old leg injury that makes it no fun to walk long distances... I really enjoy the fact that the internet can occasionally not be a total dumpster fire, and that you can legit find cool things about where you live, that may have never known.

Maybe it's pretty commonplace for people to walk out in the woods and find all sorts of awesome things. If I walk my dog in the woods out back, I just usually spend most of my time keeping him from eating deer poop. So that's why I'll often lurk about on the Maine Wildlife page on Facebook. You never know what you're going to see.
Have you ever heard of the Hologram Moth?
I was pretty much last-week-years-old when I saw a photo for the first time. It was posted by Renee Hemingway. When I clicked over to her Facebook page to see if I could use some photos, I discovered that bugs are totally her thing. So not only did I stumble onto these great photos, but she gave me a lot of other cool info as well!
But back to these cool moths... Hologram Moths, known properly as Diachrysia balluca, are about as awesome as they get. They're on the small-ish side, but I wouldn't want one flying in my face, either. And the markings and colorings are just otherworldly. The longer you look at it, the less real it looks. You can see how much their look changes, just by a slight shift in the light.
Are they everywhere?
Not exactly. But they're not necessarily super rare. Although, I'd never seen one previously. Not that it matters... But they live in the northeastern area of North America. So they can be found in parts of Nova Scotia and New England, and even a bit further south, but you won't find them very often much farther south than say, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Probably the reason we don't see them that often, is because they only come out at night. As someone who goes to bed when it's light out in the summertime, I'm not apt to see one as quickly as the night owls of the world. But you have to admit, the colors and such make the Hologram Moth easily one of the most unique we have around here.
Luckily, Hologram Moths don't bite, but some of these Maine critters will...
