It's good to know that 2020 hasn't been a total loss for everyone across the board. There are some, in fact, who will remember 2020 as the year they got their own place. Terri is one of those lucky folks. She's one of Habitat For Humanity of Greater Bangor's home recipients this year.

For the past 30 years, Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Bangor area has partnered with local individuals and organizations to help build 25 houses for folks who would otherwise have had a hard time getting in to a home of their own.

Most recently, the organization had been building condos in Old Town when the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Like many charitable groups in the area, the pandemic put a halt to those plans, temporarily. But thanks to a $15,000 Wells Fargo Foundation grant, The Habitat for Humanity condos next to Perkins Park are almost complete!

“Hundreds of local families have acquired the skills, confidence and opportunities they need to build healthier, more financially stable lives. That has only been possible with support from individual donations and business supporters like Wells Fargo,” said Dustin Smiley, Habitat's Board President."

But Habitat is still looking for some help from the local community. They are not only looking for monetary donations to help the organization fund the finishing touches of these projects, but they're also looking for volunteers from the community to help build these homes so they can be ready for families in the fall.

"If you want to be part of the next project, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor will be building a single-family home on Pearl Street in Bangor, partnering with EMCC’s Construction Trades department." For more information on volunteering, check their website habitatbangor.org.

Another way folks can help the cause is to shop at or donate to the Restore at 378 Harlow Street. They accept donations fom 9A-5P, Tuesday through Saturday.

And if you know someone who needs a safe, stable and secure place to live, there is still one 3 bedroom Habitat condo available in Old Town. Encourage them to apply.

"Our carefully qualified and screened homeowners purchase these homes according to their financial means, while putting in 200 hours of ‘sweat equity’ volunteering for Habitat, usually on the building of their own homes” said Smiley.
