Maine Meat Recall: You May Want To Check That Ground Chuck In Your Fridge Or Freezer

If you purchased any ground beef from the Hannaford's store in Farmington over the weekend, you're going to want to check this out.

The northeastern supermarket chain issued a product recall for meat sold in that specific area, warning that it may be unsafe to eat.

Hannaford's website states that the business works closely with suppliers and various health agencies to ensure the food they provide meets the safety standards set forth by the government. When a product poses a risk to the public's health or safety, it's immediately removed, and the public is informed about recall details through the site.

This week, they announced that hamburg meat is sold on Saturday, August 1st.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the Hannaford store at 131 Hannaford Drive in Farmington is recalling packages of Hannaford brand 81% Lean/19% Fat Ground Beef purchased at the store on Saturday, August 1, with a sell-by date of August 2, because the item(s) may contain foreign material."

They're advising customers to check their storage and freezer areas for this product and not eat it.

"This is a single-store advisory and applies to the Farmington store only. No injuries or illnesses have been reported."

Simply put, there could be stuff in that meat that's not supposed to be there, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

When a recall states "may contain foreign material," it indicates that the product could potentially include materials not intended to be part of it, which may pose health risks.

"This warning is often issued when there is a possibility of contamination during the manufacturing process, such as:

Physical contaminants: Items like metal shards, plastic pieces, or glass.
Biological contaminants: Bacteria or allergens that could affect consumers, especially those with sensitivities."

In this case, Hannaford says those who purchased the potentially tainted meat can return the product or its packaging to the point of purchase for a refund.
