Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Is Opening a Waterville, Maine Location

A new bargain store is getting ready to open its doors in downtown Waterville.

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is planning to open a new location at The Concourse later this fall, taking over the vacant space at 18 Concourse West that previously housed Northern Light Primary Care.

The Pennsylvania-based discount retailer specializes in closeout and surplus merchandise, with products ranging from food and household goods to clothing, books, pet supplies, hardware, rugs and seasonal items.

Company officials say the Waterville store is expected to open sometime in late October or early November.

According to the Kennebec Journal, Ollie’s has been in business since 1982 and describes itself as the nation’s largest retailer of closeout merchandise and excess inventory. The company purchases products from surplus orders, closeouts, bankrupt retailers and other sources, then sells the merchandise at deeply discounted prices.

Because of the way Ollie’s buys its inventory, the specific products available can change frequently, although the general departments inside the stores remain fairly consistent.

The Waterville location will be the company’s second store in Maine. Ollie’s already operates a location in Sanford.

The new store is expected to create between 30 and 50 jobs. Company officials also say Ollie’s fills a large percentage of management and leadership positions through internal promotions.

A grand opening celebration is also planned once the store officially opens.

The arrival of Ollie’s will add another discount retailer to the Waterville area, where Maine-based surplus and salvage chain Marden’s also operates a store.
