A man who served time in Maine for drug trafficking was injured in an alleged shootout with police in upstate New York.

U.S. Marshals Task Force Injure New York Man in Alleged Shootout

Keith Holmes, 30, of Rochester, New York, remains hospitalized after an alleged shootout with U.S. Marshals at a home in Buffalo.

He faces multiple charges, including assault on a law enforcement officer, and firearms charges related to a ghost gun used in the incident.

A 'ghost gun' is a fully functional firearm that has no serial number, and so is untraceable.

New York Man Critically Injured When Shot by Federal Agents in Buffalo

Federal law enforcement officers went to the residence to execute a federal warrant for Holmes, who was wanted for violating his supervised release by leaving the Rochester area.

WKBW-TV reports the task force members announced their presence before entering the building and as they approached the door to a bedroom where Holmes was located.

Holmes allegedly fired at the officers, striking the shield one officer carried at least twice.

The law enforcement officers returned fire, critically injuring Holmes.

None of the federal agents were injured in the incident.

New York Man Shot by Federal Agents Did Time in Maine on Drug & Firearms Charges

Holmes has a criminal history in Maine.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Maine, Holmes was found in his Augusta apartment in 2019 with bags of a mixture containing fentanyl, packed for individual sale.

Police also found cash and four firearms, as well as evidence that he was causing drug proceeds to be sent to individuals in New York State.

Keith Holmes was convicted in Maine on fentanyl and gun charges and was sentenced to three years imprisonment on the fentanyl charge, and a consecutive term of five years on the firearms charge.

He remained incarcerated until President Biden commuted his sentence in 2024.

WKBW-TV reports Holmes is also a person of interest in the homicide of Majesty Montgomery, a 29-year-old Rochester woman whose body was found buried in Yates County last month.

He has not been charged in that case.
