The former Maine governor and current House of Representatives candidate is defending Maine fishermen while criticizing his political opponents.

As of the time of publication, Paul LePage is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in the November general election, where he hopes to win the congressional seat currently held by Jared Golden, who has announced he will not seek reelection.

On March 4th, LePage posted on social media defending a Maine lobsterman facing an ethics complaint, arguing that the criticism is really an attack on the state’s fishing industry.

In the post, he said the lobsterman’s unpaid advisory role with NOAA provides valuable real-world perspective and accused “out-of-touch political extremists” of trying to silence Maine fishermen.

LePage continued by arguing that some members of Congress are trying to prevent Maine fishermen from having their voices heard in decisions affecting the industry.

Saying the fishing industry supports thousands of jobs and represents a generational legacy, adding that attempts to silence fishermen are ‘absurd and dangerous’ and ending his message with a call for critics to ‘back off.’
