Former Bangor, Maine Bar to Become New Catering and Event Center
New business alert!
MJ’s Catering is getting ready to open at 16 Union Street in Bangor, taking over the space most recently home to Salt North Taproom. The spot is being reworked into a catering and event center that will also serve Maine Savings Amphitheater concerts as well as private events.
For concert nights, the idea is pretty simple and very “in-and-out friendly”: a buffet-style setup with all-you-can-eat food, pay-at-the-door, and servers bringing around drinks. The goal is to make it easy for people to grab a solid meal without missing too much of the show they came to see. The menu will feature buffet offerings, including some recipes carried over from the former Carolina’s kitchen, keeping things familiar for longtime locals.
The concert season kicks off on Friday, June 5th.

The building itself has had quite a history. Before Salt North Taproom, the space was known for years as nightlife spots like The Waterfront and Legends. Salt North opened on May 23 of last year under Dane Morgan, offering soul food-inspired dishes, craft cocktails, an outdoor beer garden, and live entertainment. However, the venue closed a few weeks back.
Over the past several months, the establishment has had a fair share of controversy. Salt North was ordered by a court to pay a former head chef more than $135,000 after a dispute over unpaid wages.
Now, the space is getting a fresh start with MJ’s Catering stepping in.
The building's owner, Mark Greenleaf, who ran Carolina’s Sports & Spirits for more than 20 years, was also tied to the location’s history. After stepping away from Carolina’s in May 2025 and selling the business to a new owner, Greenleaf confirmed that Salt North Taproom has now closed for good, making way for the new endeavor.
