Step Back in Time With a 1977 Catalog From Maine’s LL Bean
What a trip thumbing through a Fall 1977 LL Bean catalog.
Of course, I flipped to the infamous Bean boot that has been a part of Mainer's lives for as long as LL Bean has been around (that's about 113 years for those keeping track). It was hard to find any clothing over 100 dollars, and back in the day, the 'Maine Hunting Shoe' was pretty affordable.
"If you do not know your size, give size and width of dress shoe and enclose outline of bare foot. Hold pencil straight up when tracing foot." - LL Bean Fall 1977 catalog
The most expensive LL Bean 'Bean Boot' was only $43 in 1977
Today, that price has gone up just a tad. The trendy Bean boot that has all the teens removing the laces is the 8" boot. In 1977, in the Fall LL Bean Catalog, that boot was only $27, and that included postage. Today it's just a tad higher, but still basically the same amazing, reliable boot. But that 8" boot will cost ya $149. That's not bad if you think that the price only went up about $2.50 every year since 1977.

When flipping through the catalog, you still see the classics that have made LL Bean a household word globally. But back in 1977, and this was the fall edition of the catalog, you can definitely see trends even for LL Bean. For instance, without even knowing the decade, I bet looking at this storm coat, you'd guess 1970 something.
What a fun read this 1977 LL Bean catalog is!
On a rainy day, flipping through the LL Bean Fall 1977 catalog was so much fun. I'm not sure how I got my hands on it, but I'm definitely keeping it. Spring cleaning does have its rewards!
