July 1st Tobacco Joins Alcohol In 21 Age Restriction
Not too long ago Governor Paul LePage vetoed a bill that would raise the legal age to buy tobacco to age 21. He said at the time he felt the law would not only hurt Maine businesses but he also felt that it would prohibit “legal adults” from the purchase.
Well that may be well and good but our Senate and House overrode his veto last August and on July 1st the law will go into effect. Now our legislators are completely heartless to those under the age who have already become addicted to smoking and as long as you were 18 before July 1st you can still buy tobacco in Maine. The exception to this being Portland that passed a law for that city back in 2016 prohibiting anyone under 18 to buy tobacco products in Portland.
