When Will Bangor, ME See Snow? A Look at This Season’s First Flakes
Maybe you like winter, maybe you don't.
I think I'd enjoy winter a little more if we didn't get quite as much snow. But hey... We live in Maine, so we get what we get. Sometimes it's a brutal winter, sometimes it's next to nothing. Like in the 23/24 snow season, we didn't get squat. And what we did get, all seemed to fall in the first two weeks of Spring.
But one thing Mainers always look to with great anticipation, is when we'll get the first snow of the season. Once November typically brings its more seasonable temps, people often begin to wonder when the snow is coming. It's like temps in the 30's automatically make people think snow is coming any day.
So when can we expect the first flakes in this area?
You've probably heard by now that the Farmer's Almanac is calling for a pretty wild winter overall. With impacts felt from La Nina, we're in for a fairly unpredictable ride. Temps may be hovering right around normal, but it looks like we'll get plenty of the white stuff this year. So when will it arrive?
If you look at the last several years in the Bangor area, you'll see a pretty obvious trend. For the last bunch of winters, snow has usually hit this area in the first two-ish weeks of November. However, last year it didn't hit until the 22nd. Now we're not talking just a few flakes here and there. We're talking snow of at least half an inch.
How long will it last?
That'll be the Million Dollar Question... In 2020, we got 2 inches of snow on May 9th! That's absolutely nuts. Last year of course, we were getting it in April. We even got 9 inches here in Bangor on the 4th of April. So as far as predicting when winter will end? That's anyone's guess.
But it does look pretty consistent about when snow arrives around these parts. So you could probably mark your calendars, and start thinking about having all your winter clothes all settled out, the snow blower ready to go, and the shovels at the ready. Some folks may think you're crazy, but you have science and data on your side...
Here's another thing to look forward to this fall...
