It's sad when any animal dies.

I love all animals so much. Even ones that want to eat me or do me harm, I still love them all. I'm one of those softies that gets legit bummed if I see a dead squirrel in the road. Forget about it, if I actually hit one myself. It wrecks my day beyond belief. So when I see photos of dead whales, it does hit me in the sad spot.

On the other hand, the poor thing's suffering is over, whatever it may have been. So eventually, one could argue that it's almost ok to see some humor in it. Remember last year in Hermon when someone put a "Get Well" balloon on a dead skunk in the road? Absolutely savage, yet hilarious.

Many people are making suggestions for Belfast and their beached whale.

The people of Belfast show obvious sympathy for a Minke whale that recently washed up on one of its beaches, after floating in Belfast Harbor for a couple days. Now, of course, comes the conversation of what to do with the carcass. Some offered some very pragmatic suggestions, like... Could lobstermen use it for bait?

Seems reasonable. Others suggested dragging it out to sea. Ultimately, something probably needs to be done, given it's still pretty warm out. There's legendary footage of a dead whale from Asia that was being transported through town, and the gasses built up so much inside, that the thing actually exploded in the street.

Which brings us all the way to Oregon in 1970...

Belfast, for the love of all that's good in the world, don't use this method. Not that they would, but someone will inevitably bring it up... Please... Don't blow it up. They tried that once back in the day in Oregon and it was an utter disaster. Huge chunks of the carcass went flying waaaaay up in the air, and came crashing down and people and ruined cars. Check out the video of the event. It was terrifying...

Not that I think that this is a serious consideration, but someone will probably swear up and down that they can do it the "right" way. Honestly, I never trust anyone that says they can perfect a failed method. Because they usually perfect the wrong way. But, we'll have to wait and see what the town decides to do. For now, there's just a dead whale hanging out in Belfast. Can't say that everyday...
