Maine DOT Issues Notice Of ‘Squirrel Skywalks’ For April Fools Day
There's no denying that folks at the Maine Department of Transportation have quite the sense of humor. One just has to take a trip down the highway and read some of the silly phrases they come up with to put onto those giant signs.
They also have a history of celebrating April Fool's Day with social media posts that are clever enough to actually fool folks...most of the time.

A few years ago, they sent out a notice that Maine DOT would be creating a 'Maine Office Of Space Engineers' or 'MOOSE' for short. It took a minute for folks to realize that it was a joke.
This year, they posted about a 'new initiative' they were working on to make sure squirrels could cross the roads safely. They called them 'Squirrel Skywalks', and they even had a picture up of what these structures would look like.
"This project is part of our ongoing efforts to make Maine's roads safer by reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions. The goal is to have Squirrel Skywalks installed on every major road throughout the state by the end of 2026. We expect these new wildlife crossings to reduce the cost of our roadkill cleanup efforts by up to 7%."
While it may be a joke, many people in the comment section pointed out that not only is a squirrel skywalk a pretty cool idea, some countries around the world actually have structures in place to help with wildlife crossing on roadways.
Can't wait to see what they come up with next!
